“Yesterday’s dangerous idea is today’s orthodoxy and tomorrow’s cliché.” Richard Dawkins

I am reminded almost every day of the Dawkins observation as I observe the courage of first responders throughout the world who struggle to help those stricken by the coronavirus.  Many of these heroines and heroes also become victims and die.

Dawkins is correct when suggesting that putting yourself in harm’s way is a “dangerous idea” but he agrees that the values that inspire someone to do that will never become a cliché.

The other  day, Trump proudly announced, “Our death totals, our numbers, per million people, are really very, very strong. We’re very proud of the job we’ve done.”

How could anyone be proud of more than 80,000 deaths?

First responders don’t need fly-overs by the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds. What many of them do need is our support on the ground.

How?

Avoid harm’s way so that responders won’t need to go there.
