I Am Not a Robot: A Book Review by Bob Morris

I Am Not a Robot: My Year Using AI to Do (Almost) Everything
Joanna Stern
Harper/An Imprint of HarperCollins (May 2026)

Here is “a reported and lived life” for one year, “not generated AI text.”

Joanna Stern formulated a vow to which she pledged herself completely for a period of twelve months:

“I do solemnly swear to live with machines for the next 365 days. To cram artificial intelligence into as many corners of my life as possible. Not just as a gimmick, but as an honest attempt to see what happens when AI and intelligent machines become part of everything: health care, work, entertainment, relationships, therapy, travel, sex, you name it.”

In I Am Not a Robot, Stern provides is a detailed account of what happened when she used AI to do (almost) everything for twelve months. It functioned as her Doctor, Driver, Colleague, Lover, Housekeeper, and Therapist. The details are best revealed in the book’s lively narrative, in context.

Her decisions and initiatives were guided and informed by three Rulex:

1. ALWAYS BE TESTING.
2. BENCHMARK THE BASELINE.
3. TRACK COSTS.

Stern invites you to accompany her during her quest to obtain answers to these questions, some of which you may also have:

o How did AI learn how to do what humans can do…and sometimes do it better and faster than they?

o How can AI complete some tasks very well but fail miserably at others?

o How do I live and work alongside AI and robots?

o How do I make certain that I don’t become a robot?

“This book is part explainer, part testing ground, part journey through the history of AI. By the time you finish, if you can answer these questions, you will win one big high-five from me.”

Bon voyage!
