How to maximize the value of AI to your personal growth and professional development

Long ago in Future Shock (1970) Alvin Toffler made this prediction: “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”

This book offers a cohesive, comprehensive, and cost-effective operations manual for those who realize how valuable AI can be but are unable to answer this key question: “How can I  maximize the value of AI to my personal growth and professional development?” Charlene Li and Katia Walsh offer a multi-dimensional response to that question in Winning with AI.

More specifically, they recommend what they characterize as a “90-Day Blueprint” to achieve success, one that focuses on fifteen separate but related perspectives.

1. Use AI to serve your business strategy.
2. Ask yourself, “What can AI do for me?” If you don’t know, find out.
3. Focus on driving value, not on a laundry list of AI uses.
4. Select a leader who lives, breathes, and dreams AI outcomes.
5. Build for scale or don’t build at all.

6. Fast followers end up poor losers.
7. Know what you need to know and what your “unknown unknowns are”, then learn FAST but do not fail fast.
8. Don’t be held back by feasibility.
9. AI works with good enough data.
10. Make everything as simple as possible…and then show value ASAP.

11. Write strategies in ink, tactics in pencil, and adjust as you evolve.
12. Win people’s hearts before their clicks.
13. There’s no one way to win with AI but lots of wrong ways. Be alert without losing speed.
14. If you are with a legacy company, you can eliminate interim steps and jump to the future.
15. Focus on value, maintain speed, deliver with AI today, and “shoot for the moon.”

Charlene Li and Katia Walsh provide in this book a wealth of insights and recommendations that are cohesive comprehensive, and cost-effective components of a “game plan” to utilize, indeed maximize a collaboration with AI at a time when competition in the global marketplace is far more challenging than at any prior time that I can remember.

Bravo!

Here are two suggestions while you are reading Winning at AI: First, highlight key passages. Also,  perhaps in a lined notebook kept near-at-hand,  record your comments, questions, responses to assessment exercises within the narration, and action steps (preferably with deadlines). Pay special attention to end-of-chapter summaries of key considerations.

These two simple tactics — highlighting and documenting — will expedite frequent reviews of key material later.
