The Psychology of Leadership: A Book Review by Bob Morris

The Psychology of Leadership: Timeless Principles to Improve Your Management of Individuals, Teams…and Yourself

Channeling Henry Ford: Whether you think you can become a high-impact leader or think you can’t, you’re probably right.

According to Sébastien Page, the psychology of leadership “requires you to understand yourself so you can understand others. It’s about empathy, leading by example, and personal resilience. Go put on your oxygen mask before helping others…The most important takeaway is that intrinsic motivation is found somewhere deeper than on the surface of measurable goals. Intrinsic motivation goes beyond the scoreboard.”

Page examines the nature, power, and (potential) impact of 18 separate Principles that guide and inform the psychology of leadership:

Part I: Setting long-term goals (Pinciples 1-9)
Part II: Executing those goals (10-13)
Part III: Unleashing the power of personal psychology (14-18)

After reviewing the “Big Five” traits” (extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism, openness, and conscientiousness) Page then provides a number of “Takeaways” on personality psychology. (Pages 235-247) Here’s a key point: Page is determined (obsessed?) to understand which core principles can help almost anyone to improve management of themselves so that they can then more effectively manage others, individuals or teams.

I commend Sébastien Page on The Psychology of Leadership. It is a brilliant achievement.
