Stronger Through Adversity: A book review by Bob Morris

Stronger Through Adversity: World-Class Leaders Share Pandemic-Tested Lessons on Thriving During the Toughest Challenges
Joseph A. Michelli
McGraw-Hill (December 2020)

“That which does not kill us, makes us stronger.”
Friedrich Nietzsch

Nietzsche’s observation (made in 1888) is somewhat relevant as the COVID-19 pandemic virus continues to kill so many people throughout the world. However, I did not wholly agree with the assertion when I first encountered it, and I still don’t. Adversity can permanently weaken people without killing them. Experiencing a crisis is NOT a zero sum  encounter.

Which insights and approaches have a transformational impact when challenged by adversity?

In this book, the latest of ten bestsellers, Joseph Michelli shares 20 valuable lessons he learned from more than 140 thought leaders. Briefly, this is how the material is organized:

o In Chapters 2-5, he explores the importance of setting a firm leadership foundation in times of adversity by prioritizing self-case, seeking assistance and maintaining a growth mindset, placing their people first, and focusing on safety.

o In Chapters 6-9, he explores how extraordinary leaders build trust by listening for understanding and empathy, continuing with objectivity, attending to tone and communication cadence, and being vulnerable and transparent.

o In Chapters 10-13, Michelli examines ways to drive a compassionate, value-producing culture by activating their vision, mission, and values; focusing on value over profit, tempering decisions and behaviors with sensitivity, and standing with their team.

o In Chapters 14-17, he explores how to maximize operational effectiveness in times of continual change by ranking and simplifying, taking swift action, being decisive, and increasing team functionality.

o And in Chapters 18-22, Michelli explores ways to thrive beyond crises by demonstrating consistent recognition, addressing individual needs and preferences, running toward tomorrow, and focusing on what will last.

With regard to operational excellence, keep in mind that Michelli has completed thorough analyses of organizations that include Starbucks, Mercedes-Benz, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, Airnb, UCLA Health Systems, the Pike Place Fish Market, and Zappos. In this brief summary, I have stressed his focus on the WHAT. Issues concerning the WHY and HOW are best revealed within the narrative, in context.

Stronger Through Adversity will prove to be Michelli’s most valuable book — at least thus far — because the material he provides in it will have wider and deeper impact than has any of its predecessors.

I presume to offer two suggestions to those who are about to read this book. First, pay special attention to Joseph Michelli’s brilliant use of reader-friendly devices, notably “Resilience Recap” and “Your Strength Plan.”

Also, keep a lined notebook near at hand while reading the book so that you can record questions, comments, page references, etc. It remains for each reader to determine which of the material responds most effectively to the given needs, interests, resources, and objectives of their organization.  Strategic documentation while absorbing and digesting content will facilitate, indeed expedite frequent review of key material later.
