One man’s opinions: Disruption

Much has been said and written in recent years about disruption within the global marketplace as leaders struggle to establish and then sustain organizational stability.

Change remains the only constant and occurs faster and in greater frequency than ever before.

Marshall Goldsmith nails it when observing that “what got you here won’t get you there.”

I presume to add that what got you here won’t even let you remain here.

So, consider five reasons why I think disruption can be positive, even productive:

o It can challenge assumptions and premises that are either false or no longer true.
o Change the “rules” of competition.
o Eliminate decay and stagnation, enabling a “fresh or “clean” start.
o Identify — and thereby affirm — what cannot be disrupted.
o and finally, disruption can activate creative, innovation thinking.

Organizations are only as resilient as its leaders are.

That said, be careful not to confuse resilience with expediency. Also, when making decisions,  be aware of the unknown unknowns.
