Wild times at Hewlett-Packard.  Leo Apotheker is out and Meg Whitman becomes H.P.’s fourth CEO in six years.  That’s always disruptive.  Couple that with the various shenanigans and missteps H.P.’s been through and Whitman has a particularly tough challenge ahead of her.  I wrote two articles on the situation recently.

“Meg Whitman’s Day One Itinerary as CEO of Hewlett-Packard” on Forbes.com shares six ideas for her first day and early days:

1. It is personal.
2. Order counts.
3. Messages matter.
4. Location counts.
5. Signs and symbols count.
6. Timing counts.
“Onboarding Landmines – HP CEO Failure as a Case in Point” on PrimeGenesis.com highlights three reasons H.P. Chairman, Ray Lane laid out for Apotheker’s failure:

• failed to deliver/execute
• failed to form a strong team
• failed to communicate well

It’s worth looking at both sides of the coin: what Apotheker did wrong so you don’t repeat it, and what Whitman (or you) need to do when onboarding well.

The Forbes.com article in particular seems to have struck a chord.  A LOT of people are reading that one.  Don’t be left out.  It pulls some of the thoughts from the upcoming edition of The New Leader’s 100-Day Action Plan and applies them to Whitman’s situation.  (Admit it.  You’d think less of me if I didn’t put in a plug for the book. [smile])

A lot of eyes on Meg. It’s going to be interesting to watch how she manages her first 100 days and beyond.
