‘No one will care how much you know until they know how much you care.” Theodore Roosevelt
As Yolanda Fraction would be among the first to point out, it is no secret that most of the companies annually ranked among those most highly admired and best to work for are also annually ranked among those most profitable, with the greatest cap value in their industry segment. However different they may be in other respects, all of them have a workplace culture within which their people and systems “create energy, resilience, and results.”
Fraction explains that in a joyful culture — in all levels and in all areas of operation — “people are thought about just as much, if not more, than the tasks they are performing….Clarity and trust are visible. People have a strong sense of their role and responsibility. They understand how decisions are made. They feel a sense of agency and belonging. Accountability is mutual. Transparency and fairness guide decisions. In other words, joy is not something organizations ask people to bring to work. Joy is something organizations are designed to produce.”
Years ago, Southwest Airlines’ then chairman, president, and CEO, Herb Kelleher, was asked to explain why Southwest was more profitable and had a greater cap value than nine other (larger) airlines…COMBINED.
His reply? “We take great care of our people. They take great care of our customers. And our customers take great care of our stockholders.”
My own experience suggests that in a joyful workplace, people tend to think and communicate using first-person PLURAL pronouns. A receptionist once told me, “We are so proud of our new Schefflera plants in the lobby!” It is common to hear bragging about a co-worker’s talents and decency. No one cares about who gets credit for any success. Everyone feels included and appreciated. Efforts are value-driven. Civility is not encouraged; it is required. Attrition is minimal. Retention is almost total as are mutual trust and respect. Communication, cooperation, and collaboration are results-driven,
