The wit and wisdom of Albert Einstein

I agree with Joe Theisman when he responded angrily to a reference to “dumb jocks,” pointing out that “we can’t all be Fred Einstein!”

Here is a selection of my favorite observations by Albert Einstein (1879-1955).

o “A clever person solves a problem. A wise person avoids it.”

o “Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. That’s relativity.”

o “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.”

o “Try to become not a man of success, but try rather to become a man of value.”

o “The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.”

o “Coincidence is God’s way of remaining anonymous.”

o “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution.”

o “I’m not an atheist and I don’t think I can call myself a pantheist. We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many different languages. The child knows someone must have written those books. It does not know how. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangement of the books but doesn’t know what it is. That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God.”

o “The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.”

o “Computers are incredibly fast, accurate and stupid. Human beings are incredibly slow, inaccurate and brilliant. Together they are powerful beyond imagination.”

o “If you can’t explain your ‘great idea’ to a six-year old, you really don’t understand it.”

Einstein 2o “Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.”

o “I do not know with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.”

o “Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.”

o “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.”

o “Education is what remains after one has forgotten everything he learned in school.”

o “Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the former.”

o “The search for truth is more precious than its possession.”

o “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”

o “Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.”
