Are those rabbits you’re chasing real or an illusion?

“The future is already here — it’s just not very evenly distributed.” William Gibson

When I first encountered that comment years ago, I was immediately reminded of a sign I once saw in a tavern near the Yale campus: “Free beer tomorrow.”

Today is yesterday’s “tomorrow.” Try explaining that to one of the serving staff. “Free beer yesterday” makes more sense. Back to the future indeed!

Some of the future is already here…and generally unrecognized.

The rest of the future can be identified in terms of its degree of probability.

I cannot recall a prior time when the business world was more volatile, more uncertain, more complex, and more ambiguous than it is today.

One result is that business leaders face a constant challenge when struggling to differentiate a real opportunity that exists now from others that will seldom, if ever, materialize.

For many of those manager, self-delusion is the currency of their realm.

Make sure the rabbit you chase is real and worthy of pursuit.
